What is the Don’t Mess With Texas Art Contest?
The Don’t Mess With Texas Art Contest is a statewide contest that encourages Texas students in grades 6-12 to create original works of art that promote the Don’t Mess With Texas litter prevention campaign. The contest is sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation and Keep Texas Beautiful.
How did the contest come about?
The annual “Don’t Mess With Texas” art contest started in 1986 as a way to engage youth in litter prevention. The contest is open to all Texas students in grades 6-12. Artwork must depict the “Don’t Mess With Texas” message in a creative way and can be entered in one of five categories: drawing, painting, photography, computer-generated art, or mixed media. A statewide panel of judges selects the top 3 entries in each category, and the 27 winners are honored at an awards ceremony in Austin. In addition to recognition and prizes, the top winners see their artwork featured on billboards, bus signs, and other promotional materials throughout the state.
What are the contest rules?
If you’re a texan, and you’re good at art, this contest is for you. The Don’t Mess With Texas Art Contest is a statewide contest open to all Texas residents. The purpose of the contest is to promote creativity and artwork that celebrates Texas pride.
There are four different categories you can enter: visual art, digital art, photography, and literature. You can submit up to three pieces of work in each category. All entries must be original works of art that were created within the last two years.
Judges will be looking for artwork that is creative,original, and conveys a strong sense of Texas pride. The top three winners in each category will receive cash prizes, and their artwork will be featured on the Don’t Mess With Texas website and social media channels.
How can I enter the contest?
To enter the contest, simply submit your artwork online at the contest website. You will need to provide your name, contact information, and a brief description of your artwork.
What is the prize for the contest?
The grand prize for the Don’t Mess With Texas Art Contest is a $5,000 cash prize and a trip to Austin to participate in an art show celebrating the work of the contest winners.

In addition to the requirements listed on the entry form, all entries must be received by the deadline date to be eligible. Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted. All decisions of the judges are final. No purchase is necessary to enter or win.
